Major roadworks for Thirsk
4:22pm Tuesday 7th September 2010
MAJOR works are to be carried out to repair and improve a busy road that was left damaged by the severe conditions of last winter.
North Yorkshire County Council is to spend around £155,000 on work to the A61 in Thirsk which will see the road resurfaced and repairs to footways.
The operation will begin on Monday, September 13, and is expected to take a week to complete.
County councillor Gareth Dadd, the divisional member for Thirsk, said: "We are determined to repair the damaged caused last winter before the onset of the coming winter."
He added: "There will inevitably be some inconvenience to motorists, for which we apologise. Every effort will be made to ensure the work is completed as soon as possible and that disruption is kept to a minimum."
The major element will be repairs to the carriageway, which will involve the closure of the road at night between the roundabout at the Sowerby Junction and the roundabout at Tesco and Lidl store entrances.
The road will be closed each evening from Wednesday, September 15, from 7.30pm to 6am. During the day there will be traffic signals on the carriageway to allow footway works to take place.
On Saturday, September 18, the road will be closed from 10pm to 9am to allow the works at the roundabout to Tesco and Lidl to be carried out. Vehicular access to both the stores will not be possible between those times.
However throughout the works, access to the filling station will be maintained where possible with the exception of Friday night. Pedestrian access should be maintained along A61 for the duration of the work.
The council says it has carried out extensive consultations with Tesco, Lidl and the emergency services to ensure that any disruption is kept to a minimum and to assist with the planning of the works.
Access for the emergency services will be maintained throughout.
